This project is an exploration into the cultural evolution of the indigenous people of the Sri Lanka, The Vedda. Sri Lanka's indigenous inhabitants, the Veddas -- or Wanniya-laeto ('forest-dwellers') as they call themselves -- preserve a direct line of descent from the island's original Neolithic community dating from at least 16,000 BC and probably far earlier according to current scientific opinion.
This group of Vedda has evolved differently than the Dambanna Vedda. Although both tribes were relocated out of the jungle onto farms, and no longer permitted to hunt animals or live the lives of their ancestors, these people dont seek any form of interaction with modern society nor look for financial compensation for visiting them. This tribe lives a beautiful life of sustenance living deep in the jungles of Eastern Sri Lanka.
In order to illustrate the warmness and welcoming nature of these people the majority of these photographs are shot using natural light, and focus on the daily routine of these people. These photographs represent a different nature of the people. This tribe is not focused on recreating what they once were but more interested in creating a peaceful existence within the environment that they live.
